Some frequently asked questions (and answers)...

Who are the retreats for? Do I need to be a professional, or have any special knowledge?

Mad About The House weekends are for people who are interested in interior design at all levels and every stage. Whether you’re just gathering inspiration, planning your next move, or already in full-on renovation mode.

Together with the guest experts (on home architecture, colour and interior styling) I aim to break everything down step by step in ways that feel approachable, engaging, and easy to apply to your own home.

It’s not about trends or rules. It’s about helping you gain confidence in your own style and choices, so that every decision you make feels intentional and right for you.

Are the retreats only for people who are actively renovating or redesigning?

Not at all. They are just as valuable for those looking for inspiration as for those already involved. You don’t need to be tackling a full home overhaul — perhaps you’re reimagining a single room, refining your style, or simply want to immerse yourself in beautiful spaces, design conversations, and creative inspiration.

Many attendees appreciate the opportunity to step away from the everyday, soak up fresh ideas, and enjoy an indulgent, design-filled weekend. If you love interiors, vintage finds, incredible food, and great company, you’ll feel right at home. And for those who are planning to renovate or redesign their spaces, you’ll leave with practical knowledge, expert guidance, and the confidence to take your project forward.

Do the prices include a private room, or will I be sharing?

The price quoted for every retreat includes your own private, spacious room in a landmark 4-star hotel. However, if you’d like to bring a friend and share, there’s a discount to cover this (please ask for details – it does vary a little depending on the date you choose).

What’s included in the price – and what isn't?

Once you arrive at the hotel on Friday evening, everything is taken care of — all your food, drinks, accommodation, local transport, and workshops are included. From relaxed aperitivi to unforgettable Michelin-starred dining, you won’t need to reach for your wallet unless you spot something irresistible at the vintage market.

The only things not included are:
- Your flights to Turin
- Your transfer from the airport to the hotel (a 30-minute taxi ride)
- Any extra hotel nights if you choose to extend your stay

The retreats are as much about relaxation, connection, and indulgence as about learning and inspiration.

Are the retreats only for people in the UK or Italy?

Absolutely not. They’re open to everyone, wherever you are in the world! Last year we welcomed guests from Singapore, the US, Australia and New Zealand, as well as those from all over Europe.

If you are travelling from further afield, we highly recommend arriving a day or two early to settle in and get a preview of Turin at your own pace. We can arrange an extended stay with the hotel (billed separately) and offer recommendations for great things to see and do. Italy has excellent inter-city train services, with Milan just an hour away, making it an easy addition to your trip.

I’m coming solo. Will I fit in?

Absolutely. Most past attendees have come alone, and the retreats are designed to be relaxing and welcoming. Big groups can be daunting, but by restricting the weekends to just 15 participants, it’s easy to connect with like-minded people who share a love for interiors, design, and beautiful spaces. Whether you're an introvert or extrovert, you'll be able to settle in, share ideas, and enjoy the experience.

Will I get 1:1 time with Kate (and/or Catherine, for June guests)?

One of the reasons we limit spaces to just 15 is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for personalised discussions and expert guidance. Throughout the weekend, you’ll definitely have time to ask questions, get tailored insights on your project, and even discuss your specific challenges with me (and/or Catherine) directly.

I’m in the middle of a design project. Will I get the practical advice I’m looking for?

Of course. The retreats are not just about inspiration, but real knowledge and strategy. For guests in June, the focus is on more immersive renovation projects. In September and October, the emphasis is identifying and expressing your own sense of design. My aim is to equip every guest with the skills and confidence to move their project forward seamlessly – however big or small it may be. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and receive expert insights throughout – as well as a 1:1 follow-up with me.

I have specific dietary requirements. Can these be accommodated?

That's no problem. Just let us know in advance, and we’ll ensure that all meals take your wishes into account. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have other allergies or intolerances, the restaurants we visit will create dishes that are just as delicious and thoughtfully prepared.

I don’t have a massive budget for my project. Will a retreat still be useful to me?

Yes. The core purpose of each retreat is to learn how to make the right design and renovation decisions — at any budget. From optimising layouts and prioritising investments to discovering timeless pieces and blending high-end with affordable, we’ll help you make smart choices that elevate your space without overspending. Knowing where to spend and where to save is invaluable. These retreats are a great chance to learn from experts who do it every day.

So how do I book?

Simply email me (kate@madaboutthehouse.com) to secure a place. With only 15 spots available for each retreat, I recommend booking as soon as possible — the retreats do tend to fill up quickly and sold out completely in 2024.

And if you have additional questions (about flights, transfers, extending your stay, or anything else), don’t hesitate to drop me a note — I’m happy to help.
